Meet Featured Artist for THANKFUL Dos Tres, Don Oliver Scott III an Inglewood Artist

Artist Bio Dos Tres 2022 Dos Tres (b. Don Oliver Scott III, Oakland, CA, 1948) was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. A child of the 60’s he was greatly influenced by the art and expressive music of the San Francisco psychedelic scene. In high school he enjoyed painting lessons from S. F. artist/mentor Jim Scott, and his retail village concept/model earned first place at the California Industrial Arts Exposition in Sacramento. Architecture studies at U.C. Berkeley (’69 -’70) opened his eyes to the historic relationship between humans and the natural environment. His model of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon was prominently displayed in the lobby of Wurster Hall, home of Berkeley’s Department of Architecture. Attending a lecture seminar and discussions with architect Richard Neutra convinced him that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Work for NorCal architects and engineers followed. In 1978 Dos Tres came to Los Angeles where he drafted Hilton and Hyatt Regency interiors for Hirsch Bedner Associates, now the largest hospitality design firm in the world. Around this time Dos was invited to the home of Muhammad Ali, who autographed his airbrushed oil painting of Ali fighting in the ring. A stimulating ’85 –‘86 stint at Walt Disney Imagineering doing set design for Disneyland LA also provided the opportunity to flex his musical side and venture into audio design for the Life-Health Pavilion’s ‘Journey Through the Body’ at EPCOT Center. Exposure to Disney’s elite force of artists encouraged him to up his game and absorb new techniques. Living in LA Dos Tres has painted murals in restaurants, music studios, professional offices and private homes. He created super-graphics, redesigned the cafeteria and served as a facility planner for Allied Signal Corporation in Torrance. In 2007 Dos began work for the J. Paul Getty Trust at both the Villa and Getty Center Museums, immersing him in the great artistic milieus from the ancients to the modern masters. In 2010 his ‘Ubersketch’, a fantastical color pencil rendering of Tim Hawkinson’s Uberorgan installation, was displayed at the Getty’s bi-annual Underground exhibit. He gave a lecture on its creation at the Getty Research Institute with Getty curatorial staff and guests in attendance. Recently retired from the Getty, Dos Tres is now free to explore his insatiable passions for writing, music, painting and video production. My dearest readers of Ginger's Art Journal, I'm back. 

There is joy and there is much sadness too. There are flowers blooming and flowers in decay. I admit, I did drop out of traveling to art exhibitions during Covid19, but it was a couple years before that, that I had to slow down. I took on my family responsibilities as care giver and had less and less time for travel and art. But I did find respite in my photography through my cellphone. Imagine that, 'I thought to myself,' a traditional photographer that had spent numerous hours in a darkroom developing images and now compared developing a picture at light speed with a click of an index finger on my cellphone and then I can even fix the picture in edit mode. Photography has indeed come a long way.

When I did see the difficult moments confront me in real life, I could turn away and find a flower to photograph and immerse myself in the escape to beauty right there on my cellphone. Dang thing. But I didn't ignore the arts during these challenging golden year changes. I was able to use my cellphone as the connection by which I didn't lose my connection to the world, I didn't miss the openings, because I could see the wonderful pictures on Facebook and social media. I did stay connected. And now, my fingers are itchy to write again, to drive across town, put on a mask, and dust off my digital camera and do my photo-journalist thing that I do. I have not abandoned my deepest ambitions to curate some art shows, to have a space of my own, to be able to invite folks back inside and to get all "creative" again. I can't predict anything in this unique new spring that I feel is coming to my life now, at this present moment in time. I just know I've been away and I'm ready to pick up where I left off. Here's to progress and getting through 2022!

LA Art Show 2017 PhotoJournal Interview with Chinese Artist, Si Bowen by Ginger Van Hook

On the Opening Night of the LA Art Show 2017, the first artist to capture my eye with his painting was Si Bowen. This was not easy to do as I was carried away by the crowd at the entrance and was led through a throng of art lovers all but covering the paintings and artworks with their own presence of appreciation. The fact that we are about a week from the inauguration of a new President, it seemed fit to come across a painter with an outside perspective of our election process. Si Bowen, an artist born in Beijing, China who studied art not only in Beijing, but in France and New York, described to me that his rendering of the television debate versions of Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton were painted to describe the passage of time. Viewed as duplicate and triplicate images of Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton side by side on their podiums with hand gestures superimposed one over the other, yielded an out of focus picture of the debate postures from last year. That the image captured my eye because it looked politically vaguely amusing or satirical yet timely or that it expressed a unique and clever perspective was something that made me stop and want to meet the artist. The American People might agree that our process is somewhat murky when we transition from one administration to another, so the artist Si Bowen, might have captured in his painting, the unclarity of our union in mid-gesture. Nonetheless, his portfolio of non-political images was of even further interest as one of his favorites was the wonderful painterly expression and focus on his grandmother's hand. Si Bowen stated that he had studied in France as well as spent time in the arts in New York and that he started drawing at the age of three. When his father observed his talents, he enrolled him in the art schools at an early age. Some of the works that Si Bowen showed me in his catalogue were even more spiritually related than just his exploration of time and space and matters of death and spirituality. 

Si Bowen is a multi-diciplinary artist creating works in sculpture, oil paint, and installation works. Si Bowen is represented by the LIAHONA ART SPACE representing the strong forces of young Chinese artists.

LOS ANGELES, CA – Inglewood has become the fastest growing artist community in Los Angeles. It is also the fastest growing city, undergoing daily changes for and around the NFL stadium, Hollywood Park Casino, along new Metro lines and downtown Inglewood. The tenth annual Inglewood Open Studios tour will showcase the impressive depth and talent of this community on the weekend of November 12-13, from 12:00 to 5:00pm both days. As always, Inglewood Open Studios remains an artist run event, co-organized by local non profit Inglewood Cultural Arts (ICA).

On both Saturday November 12 and Sunday, November 13, Inglewood artists will open their studios to the public, inviting visitors to personally tour their private working spaces and enjoy art created in all media--drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed-media, photography, print making, installation, video and performance.

To mark our 10th year anniversary, co-founder Renée Fox will curate a group show of 2016 Inglewood Open Studios artist participants at Residency gallery, a new gallery in Inglewood, managed by Rick Garzon. With its second exhibition about to open, Residency has already had reviews in Contemporary Art Review la (also known as CARLA) and Artillery. The group show will serve as stop #1 on the tour route, and, as a preview of art that can be seen on the tour. Group show dates: Saturday, November 12 through Wednesday, November 16 with a closing reception on November 16 from 6-9PM.
